Is there a sleep function in these units?

I'm using a PBF4 to control lighting and video software for gigs. I've noticed every half hour or so, the unit stops outputting midi. Lights are still on the unit but I have to unplug, replug, and relisten for the unit in software to get it to work again.
Happening in both Resolume & Pangolin so don't think it's software related

Any ideas?

I haven’t seen this personally, even over hours, so maybe I can ask some things the Intech folks would probably ask when they see your question: Computer? On battery or wall power? Operating system? USB hub?

No sleep function.
When the units drop out, can you still see them in Editor?
Are their LEDs still responsive?

Don't have editor
Running from usb 2 port on mains powered PC

The question is: are the LEDs responsive when the units are "asleep" ?

This may be a case where your PC is putting the USB port to sleep, either as part of an energy saving scheme or via a BIOS setting. Have you checked this?

In the video you posted on another thread, it looks like the module LEDs are frozen.

How can I tell if they're responsive? I didn't realised they responded at all. Do they flash when actuated?

JDB JDB ·

As for PC/bios settings, I'll check that, although problem seems to occur across every PC and laptop I've used

If the LEDs do not react when you move the potentiometers that means that the module rebooted into a crash. We're currently investigating a similar issue, perhaps it's related.

Can you tell me what your exact setup is? In your video I can see that you're using it with a software that seems like Resolume to me. Are you using two-way communication with the software?

JDB JDB ·

Hey Balint!
So far, my setup has been the legacy PBF4 on its own, plugged into range of laptops and NUCs, controlling either Resolume, Pangolin Quickshow, or Avolites. Issue seems to happen regardless of PC/laptop and software.
If there's any further testing I can do at future gigs, please let me know. I'll double check power options although I've used APC midi controllers and dedicated lighting desks on USB-B with all of these setups without issue for years, so I think it's unlikely it's a USB port power issue.
As for two way communication, I'm not sure, how would I check this?

Thanks!

You could see if the module is sent MIDI in Grid Editor if you have it open while Resolume or others are running.

So your module is one of the older ones with the logo on the front?

Sorry, by legacy I meant clicky buttons!

JDB JDB ·

I haven't used grid editor yet, I'll get it downloaded

narayb narayb ·

Oh I see, that's the current architecture so there should be no problem with that.

narayb narayb ·

Thank you! It can help a lot with troubleshooting.

narayb narayb ·

In the meanwhile we're trying to replicate the issue inhouse.

JDB JDB ·

Cool, I'll see if I can do the same with my home setup, if I have time!
