Yep, I'd use led animations + midi Rx, as Greg said. ☝️
On midi Rx I'd turn on the led animation followed by a timer call, then you turn off the animation inside the timer.

Once again thanks @user and @user. After a few attempts I think I'm getting to grips with Lua and the Grid Editor. I program in C++ and Python and although I find the programming interface confusing, I think the penny has dropped. BTW my DAW is Cubase 15 Pro.👍

That's great to read! With your programming experience, if you leverage some AI (Claude, chatGPT, etc.) you'll be golden, it should help you deal with the intricacies of the interface and I feel you'll get a solid understanding quickly.
