EN16 stuck with purple LEDs after flashing firmware 1.3.1 to 1.3.4 (FIXED)

Flashing firmware 1.3.1 and 1.3.2 on my EN16 (ESP32) results in “Bootloader connection lost” message and device stuck with purple LEDs on (I am usually using page 1 with blue LEDs) right after flashing (device becomes completely unresponsive). Both manual and automatic updates result in the same issue. Reverting to 1.2.39 solves the problem.

My PO16 is not experiencing the same issue (flashing firmware 1.3.1 seems to be going OK). Haven’t tried to flash 1.3.1 or 1.3.2 yet on my two PBF4 devices.

Grid Editor version: 1.5.5

We had a bug in the firmware, but we've just released a fix. Please open the Grid Editor — it will prompt you to update. Once it's updated, plug in your module and the firmware update will appear. Please install it.

Thanks for the support. Unfortunately, same symptoms with 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.3 and 1.3.4 (both automatic (Grid Editor 1.5.6) and manual updates) ---> EN16 device (ESP32-based) unresponsive with purple LEDs on right after update. Reverting to 1.2.39.

EN16 stuck with purple LEDs after flashing firmware 1.3.1 to 1.3.4

Yes, I did with each version (1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.3, 1.3.4) with no success.

Greg-Orca Greg-Orca ·

So when you plug in then it's flashing purple? what happens if you start to press the Utility button (side) or long press?

Greg-Orca Greg-Orca ·

on 1.3.4

AyalaValva AyalaValva ·

Nope, LEDs become fixed purple (full intensity). Device becomes unresponsive and is not seen by Grid Editor 1.5.6.

When this happens, when I:

  • Short press on the utility button, the device gets into bootloader mode (green LEDs on)
  • Long press on the utility button, the device gets into bootloader mode (green LEDs on)

This happens with 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.3, 1.3.4 firmware versions, both on automatic and manual firmware updates, and both with or without factory reset.

please use this FW until the bugs fixes.

dev team are currently working on it

UPDATE:

The nightly FW release (correcting instability issues and immediate_send) doesn’t change the problem on my side (did the automatic nightly FW update) both with and without factory reset.

EN16 device (ESP32 based) still unresponsive with fixed purple LEDs on. Reverting to 1.2.39.

i think it has to do with bootloader versions. My EN16 with newest bootloader experienced this problem whereas old bootloader did not.

Benjamin AM Benjamin AM ·

How do I revert back to an old boot loader?

AyalaValva AyalaValva ·

Great finding! I hope the Intech devs can find a way to make their new 1.3.x firmware compatible with the new bootloader so I don't have to send them back my device.

narayb narayb ·

There aren't officially multiple versions of the ESP32 Grid bootloader iirc.

narayb narayb ·

Some of the earlier modules released with early versions of the bootloader, having a different name, but it really shouldn't make a difference.

narayb narayb ·

If you suspect the bootloader could be the cause, please send in a screenshot of the bootloader device name for the correctly updating and the not updating ones as well.

SO I made a mistake, Both of my EN16s have the same bootloader. My EF44 has the older Bootloader. However, only one the of the EN16's will take the new update. The one that won't update is an early version of the V2 series. It orginally shipped with 3D printed case.

Benjamin AM Benjamin AM ·

This makes this problem even more confusing

narayb narayb ·

I see. Is this module also stuck with purple LEDs after the update like some other users reported?

narayb narayb ·

And just to confirm this happened on Editor 1.5.7?

Benjamin AM Benjamin AM ·

Yes it is Editor 1.5.7. The newer EN16 passes update. The slightly older EN16 gets stuck. I have tried to factory reset but this does not solve the issue

narayb narayb ·

I see. Are the LEDs purple when it gets stuck?

Benjamin AM Benjamin AM ·

Yes sir

I did send an email more than a week ago but didn't get a reply. Sent a follow-up email but didn't hear from you. What should we do?

Re:peter Re:peter ·

i have this same issue is there a fix?

kkerti kkerti ·

I wanted to handle your case through the new commerce system, but not all plugins are present yet for RMA / warranty cases. We're going to solve your case next week - just with a couple more manual steps on our end. You'll get a reply once package is sent out!

AyalaValva AyalaValva ·

Hi Kristof, thank you very much for your reply. I sent an email asking if I could get a discount instead of a replacement unit since I might buy some new V3 units. Please check my email and let me know if this would be doable. Thank you.

Interestingly, I had this issue last night, but I unplugged my EN16 and plugged it back in this morning and the LEDs were back to Blue. How do I see what version of the bootloader I have installed in Grid Editor? (Is there a way? I actually haven't used it in a while, and I have Grid Editor v1.3.8 – so quite old. Haven't bothered to download the new one yet.)

Greg-Orca Greg-Orca ·

You only need to update the bootloader if you have the D51-type module — you can identify this by checking if the logo is printed on the faceplate.

Download the latest version of Grid Editor, and it will most likely prompt you automatically to update the firmware of the module. This update also fixes the purple LED bug.

Re:peter Re:peter ·

I am un able to fully update my en16 because the grid editor disconnects and then the lights go purple like mentioned above

Re:peter Re:peter ·

i had to go back to september 25 2024 fw
